haa muffingurls in action! This is our first muffin wallpaper. We had to redo another one,a better one i guess (: Silk screen takes a lot of patience because there are always be the "error" before reaching perfection right? So yeah,our print moved and smeared the design.

Proceeding with our multi-layered muffin wallpaper plan, I came up with the muffin silhouettes as the base: Followed by the second layer, which consist of the coloured muffins:
After showing this to Mr.Yan, however, he commented that it does not seem to appear very much retro. Plus, this whole idea would be costing us too many silkscreens for there seem to be an endless flow of colours, thereinafter being too time and cost consuming. We decided to come up with more sketches to present to Mr.Yan. Here is what i came up with:
Expanding from the idea of baby animals, i came up with these muffin rattles. What do you think, Mr.Yan?

Reference Pictures - Retro!

Here are some reference retro pictures that I found on the net.
Because we're using silk screen method to produce the final artwork, I tried to find simple designs that doesn't require too many colour changes and complicated patterns to make our lifes easier. Also we, don't need to spend more money buying more colours.

We're putting these designs in the jellyfishes; sort of like decorating the jellyfishes with retro patterns. 3 different designs will be chosen and used.

Its designs are simple yet interesting to look at. The colours used are also very retro.

Will upload the sketches (pencil and digital) soon.

what do you think liwen? do comment yeah ! i would prefer to keep my designs simple yet keeping the space to have the charming retro feel.

sketch 1 : the muffins are filled with retro patterns and they are supposed to form a tree shape.

sketch2 : did this for fun. was testing the colours. It is a safe bet to choose bright colours. lonely giant muffin;p

I was doing more research on retro designs and elements,wee! i found these cool stuff. well,retro designs can be defined as quirky and maybe something that is no longer in production but hey, look at how the cool retro styles applied on modern things/designs. just let your creativity shine through the retro design!

i went to do some research on retro patterns and art to have a better understanding on retro that would certainly help in this project. well,retro simply mean old fashioned,functioning much like timeless or classic;mostly a completely different realm.

yes as what swea phin has already mentioned about the mind map,concept and the process of creating a retro wallpaper(silkscreen) and muffins are definitely the main theme for this project! a light moist cake,perfect snack for any time of the day that comes in varieties and flavours :D

Buttering the muffin pans

Here are few of the many sketches we came up with during one of our many discussions.

After consultation from Lecturer Yan, our plan was to have a multi-layered wallpaper. The first layer was to have our muffin silhouettes laid out in an orderly and repeated manner, so that it looks like the shadow for our second layer. The latter has muffins, arranged in a similar fashion, except that they are coloured and flavoured. These second layer muffins are offset from their first layer a little for the shadow to peek out, making it stand out. Meanwhile, on the flavoured muffins are baby animal cut-outs, with retro designs on it. From my point of view it would turn out something like this (which I sambil drew sambil listened to Mark snorting away during Culture and Society in Malaysia lecture):
However, we later decided on putting jellypishies instead of baby animals after a spark of inspiration.

Brainstorm!

We ran a search through our mindmap and shortlisted these words out:

- hairy - muffins

- gay - kitten

- durian - stars

- baby animals - handbag

- music notes - beef

- chicken wings - gothic

- lollipops - buttocks

- condom - entertainment

From these bunch of random words, we linked them together to come up with these random (mindless) sentences:

1. Hairy muffins stuck in condom (eww god spare us all)

2. Baby animals eating durians under the star in a.. err.. handbag

3. Gay kittens (wth) playing notes with a lollipop using chicken wings

4. Beef buttocks sitting in gothic durians (imagine that)

5. Muffins made out of baby animals' heads, spilling out from a handbag (explains the influx in crime rate)

6. Beef is good to make hairy buttocks (what else to expect from Miss Queenie)

7. Hairy muffins growing on trees with baby animals playing ring-a-ring-a-roses under it.

8. Gothic chicken wings are gay (wow i never knew that.)

From these quirky sentences, we picked sentence no. 7 as a concept for our wallpaper. Hairy muffins, creepy trees, and shameful animals. Haha way to go!

Wallpaper mindmappie

First step to creating our retro wallpaper: mindmapping! From a single 'wallpaper' word, we ended up at different ends of the world, with gays and muffins and chicken wings and buttocks. Work of art by Miss Queenie, Miss Yee Wern and Miss Swea Phin. Each of us transformed a part of our originally messy, colourful mindmap draft into this messy, colourful mindmap:
